Muskingum River

The Muskingum River is formed by the confluence of the Walhonding and Tuscarawas Rivers in Coshocton, Ohio, flowing south through Zanesville where it is joined by the Licking River. It eventually drains into the Ohio River at Marietta. The Muskingum River travels 112 miles in all and its ten locks are still hand-operated in the same manner as 150 years ago. There are 3 locks located in Muskingum County including Philo Lock #9, Zanesville Lock #10, and Ellis Lock #11. It is the longest river lying wholly within Ohio. It has historically served as a transportation corridor to and from the Ohio River, and its abundant resources have sustained communities throughout history. The hand-operated locks along the waterway have not inhibited its natural qualities; the river is home to abundant fish, birds, and wildlife. All three species of black bass (largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted), saugeye, and various speicies of catfish are abundant. The area is rich in history and natural appeal, making it an ideal water trail destination for all types of motorized and hand-powered boats.

Distinctions:
The 160-year-old navigation system of the Muskingum River Parkway was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2001. Along with such majestic institutions as Hoover Dam, the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge, the Muskingum River's hand-operated locks are recognized as one of America's great engineering accomplishments.

The 4,578-acre Blue Rock State Forest, located 12 miles southeast of Zanesville is accessed primarily via State Route 60 and Culter Lake Road.

Most of the marginally productive farmland was originally acquired by the federal government during the 1930s under the Resettlement Administration. Surface ownership was later transferred to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry while the federal government retained three-fourths interest in the oil and gas rights. Subsequent reforestration and the application of forest management and protection practices have transformed low quality farmland into one of Ohio's most beautiful and productive forests.
